Employee Receives the
National Park Service Search and Rescue Award
On January 4, 2007 the National Park Service awarded
the National Park Service Search and Rescue Award to CEMML employee
Ian Bagley. Ian rescued a 3 year old girl from certain death while
on a family vacation at the Grand Canyon National Park in September
2006. The girl fell from an observation point above the Grand Canyon.
She fell 35 feet onto a talus slope. She survived the first fall,
but with each movement slipped further down the talus slope toward
another drop - this one 200 feet. Risking his own life and employing
skills and selflessness learned as a Boy Scout and during EMT training,
Ian climbed down the first cliff and reached the girl just 5 feet
above the second drop . . . and certain death.
