CEMML TPS 04-16: Unpaved Roads Condition Assessment Protocol. Matt D. Kunze and David S. Jones.

Unpaved Road Condition Assessment.zip (9.20 MB)

This report presents a field protocol for assessing the condition of unpaved roads on military lands. The protocol is a modified version of the U.S. Army Unsurfaced Road Maintenance Management System. Use of the protocol will help Range and Training Land Assessment (RTLA) coordinators support a high-quality road network for military training and prioritize drainage and erosion problems associated with roads. A GPS data dictionary and field testing results from Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Fort Jackson, SC are included as Appendices.

Introduction to Data Analysis using MS Access, MS Excel, Systat, and ArcGIS (8/30/2004)

CEMML TPS 04-14: Introduction to Data Analysis using MS Access, MS Excel, Systat, and ArcGIS. Christine Bern

DataAnalysis.zip (1.89 MB)

This handout from the 2004 ITAM Workshop describes some simple data analyses that can be performed in Access, as well as how to move data from Access to Excel for further analysis. In Excel, the use of pivot tables is explained, along with some statistical analyses are described. The same analyses are then demonstrated in SYSTAT. Finally, a set of data will be transferred for use in a GIS. The zip file contains the document and sample files.

Microsoft Access Batch SQL Utility (8/5/2004)

Some database programs allow the user to execute a number of Structured Query Language (SQL) commands in batch mode. This allows the user to execute a number of SQL statements in one step. Microsoft Access supports this ability but the average user may be unaware of this functionality. This utility allows the average user to execute SQL statements in batch mode. This utility takes advantage of VBA programming. Little, or no, knowledge of VBA or programming is required to use this utility, however; knowledge of Microsoft Access SQL syntax is required. This utility is only intended to be used with UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE SQL statements. The Microsoft Access Batch SQL Utility is available on the CEMML Support Publications page.

Congratulations to Anne Ulrey, a CEMML Research Associate, who just passsed the arduous exam to become a Certified Forester. (8/2/2004)

For the past three years Anne has worked in the forestry office at Fort Campbell. The Certified Forester program, under the auspices of the Society of Amercian Foresters, promotes excellence in the stewardship of our nation's forest resources, in compliance with both legislated and voluntary best management practices. The CF program advances these goals through the development, maintenance, promotion, and administration of an examination-based professional forester certification underpinned by ongoing professional development and commitment to standards of professional practice.

Converting SQLBase Databases to Microsoft Access (7/7/2004)

When LCTA was originally developed a standard database management system was selected to store the data collected by LCTA. The database selected was SQLBase by Gupta.

Since then many new database tools have become available. Some of these new tools are packaged with complete office software solutions and are now very popular. Microsoft Access, for example, has risen to the forefront of popularity in the database arena and many installations have converted their databases to Microsoft Access. This document is intended to assist the reader with converting their LCTA databases from SQLBase to Microsoft Access. Converting SQLBase Databases to Microsoft Access is available at the LCTA and ITAM Help Desk.

CEMML's Soil Erosion and Sediment Deposition Prediction Services (6/21/2004)

Soil erosion and sediment deposition can be significant environmental issues on military training lands. Accurate modeling and mapping of current erosion conditions and potential erosion risk can assist military land managers and trainers in optimizing training schedules, delineating training areas, and monitoring the impacts of training over time. Soil erosion status is also the primary criterion used by the Army Training and Testing Area Carrying Capacity (ATTACC) methodology to determine environmentally sustainable levels of military activities. Visit the Soil Erosion and Sediment Deposition Prediction Services page for more information.

U.S. Army Garrison Alaska Cultural Resources Program Wins 2003 Army Cultural Resources Management Award!! (3/5/2004)

The USARAK Cultural Resources Management Program, under the direction of CEMML Research Associate Russell Sackett, has won the Army's 2003 award for "Best Cultural Resources Management Program." In three years, a staff of seven transformed U.S. Army Garrison Alaska cultural resources management from a $60,000-a-year program to a comprehensive $1.2 million effort. This growth reflects the program's focus on upholding the installation's environmental and military missions on more than one million acres of Alaskan terrain.

"Alaska has a cutting-edge program both in terms of compliance and stewardship," said judging panel member Dr. David Guldenzopf, U.S. Army Environmental Center Cultural Resources Branch Chief. "The magnitude of the program, the acres managed, the National List of Historic Sites, and tribal requirements define this award-winning installation."

CEMML provides substantial technical support for the USARAK program in the form of permanent CSU Research Associates and seasonal hourly employees. CSU/CEMML Research Associates serving at USARAK during the award period were Russell Sackett, Nancy Fichter, Katherine Price, Aaron Robertson, and Kirsten Anderson.
